Solution

Answer: The source of glycerol for the synthesis of triglycerides can be the food we ingest and the glycolysis and/or gluconeogenesis cycle. Dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP) is produced by triose isomerase from Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate during glycolysis. The DHAP, thus, produced can be reversibly converted to Glycerol-3-phosphate by the action of the enzyme Glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase.

Glycerol-3-phosphate can also be produced by the direct phosphorylation of a glycerol molecule.
