A graph of electric potential versus position in the xdirect

A graph of electric potential versus position in the x-direction is shown below. Six positions in the region are labeled. Rank the electric field at the labeled positions. Please rank the electric field from highest to lowest. Recall that negative numbers are lower than positive numbers.

Solution

Electric field is given by :

E = -dV/dx

Thus from the curve Electric field is given by the negative of the slope of the curve

So, at A, slope = +ve. So, E = -ve

at B , slope = +ve (which is same as A) <---- same magnitude and sign as A.

So, at B , E is same as A

At C :

slope is 0

At D:

slope is -ve. So, E is +ve

At E

E = 0 <--- as slope = 0

At F :

E =-ve but the lowest magnitude of the other two at A and B

So, ranking them in highest to lowest , we get :

D > (C = E) > F > (A = B)
