A certain company is producing chemical products, surgical spirits (lab alcohol) in particular. The products are transported to various chemical enterprises including a paint factory located five miles away from the chemical production plant. Three or four times a week a truck arrives and it is hitched to a carefully filled, measured and sealed tank trailer with a capacity of 1000 liters and the truck then pulls the trailer to the paint factory. There the spirit is pumped out, its volume is carefully measured and the tank trailer is returned to the production factory to await the next trip. For some time spirit has been disappearing. At each delivery it has been discovered that there is a shortfall of 15 to 20 liters and just before Christmas it has even reached 30 liters. The filling equipment at the production plant and at the receiving factory was checked, but all was in order. The tank cylinder was checked- not the slightest crack or leaks. The seals of each tank delivery arriving at the paint factory were checked, each one was in tact. And yet 15 - 20 liters were missing each time! Not really such a lot, but still it is annoying and dangerous! Hundreds of liters have disappeared for no known reason. The owner of the chemical firm gave orders for the tank delivery to be sent under guard, but to no avail. The infuriated boss then hired private detectives and they set up observation posts at points along the route, but nothing changed. The paint factory pays only for what is measured on delivery. Also, the paint factory is looking for another supplier since the shortfall impacts their paint production schedule. The physical integrity of the tank has been examined and it has no leaks or evaporative problems. What approach can you suggest to analyze the situation and discover the underlying problem causing this loss of product, revenue and good will?

Solution

1. first thing, when everything is correct then there is no chance to loose the spirit. but as per this case, it is found still there is a problem. now look is there any difference between the instruments which are used to measure. I mean check whethere the instruments are having same quantity measurement or not. (if the supplier measuring it in liters and the receiver measures it in KGs converts it into liters, etc)

spirit has a characterstic of evoporate, means it can mingle with the temparature and joins with free air, like gas and petrole.

here we defined the problem successfully, we can find solution for it. the immediate action is we should speak with the buyer. because of this action loosing a valueable supplier is not at all a right strategy. convince them soonly resolve the issue. and make correct strategies and find the solution. difinitely at some point we missed the logic and it is causing to the problem.

2. the flow chart will be: first correcting the empty tank whether is it upto the mark or not,2. check the spirit is upto the asked quantity and quality levels, 3. check is there any leaks or chances to evoporate into the air, 4. calculate the tank temparature (high temparature may cause to evoporate the spirit), 5. carefully observe the conditions at the dumping place, 6. check the measuring instrument at the dumping place.
