For what kinds of species would longevity correlate with population growth? For what kinds would it not correlate? During which age interval would life-saving medical advances have the most impact on potential population growth? Why?

Solution

1.For some plant species like perennial herbaceous plants, longetivity correlates with population growth as there occurs more temporal variation and fecundity variation. In case of animal species no such correlation exists as longetivity depends on the metabolic activities in the body.

2.During the age of 1-5, life saving medical advances have the most impact on potential population growth. This is because children at the age of 1-5 do not develop resistance to infectious diseases and are more prone to getting infected by various diseases. This could lead to increase in mortality rate and a decrease in population growth. So medical advances at this age interval can help the children to survive and thereby increase population growth.
