Can somebody answer this problem and show work?

Which is the best estimate for the shaded are? The grid has squares with side lengths of 1 meter. a. 20 3/4 m^2 b. 21 1/8 m^2 c. 21 3/8 m^2 d. 22 1/2 m^2

Solution

This is a simple problem of area approximation by counting.

In the question, first of all count total number of grids which are totally inside the area. Then count grids which are more than half inside the area. Leave others.

Clearly 18 grids are fully inside area and 4 grids are such that more than their half is inside area.

Thus the total area should be greater than 22 square m.

Hence option d.
