Protein kinases are enzymes which catalyses the transfer of phosphate groups between substrates. The process is commonly known as phosphorylation. They transfer the alpha phosphate from ATP or GTP to its protein substrate. During phosphorylation a substrate gains a phosphate group and a highenergy ATP molecule donates a phosphate group. The phosphorylation regulates the protein functions by inducing conformational changes or by dusruption and creation of protein-protein interactions.

During phosphorylation, the phosphate group regulates the activity of protein by creating a network of hydrogen bonds among adjecent aminoacids available. This special hydrogen bonds network is controlled by the three dimensional structure of phosphorylated protein. The phosphorylation also regulates the activity of protein by disrupting the surface of protein-ligand interactions without inducing any conformational changes. All the enzyme refulations are by the process of phosphorylation which is mediated by kinases.
