Chromatin is a loose network of dna molecules in highly coiled fashion. For it to get replicated, or transcribed it has to acquire into a condensed structure called as chromosome. A centromere in the centre holds together 2 chromatids , and forms it arms. This is now called as chromosome. Now when the cell needs to divide, it wants it\'s genome to get doubled, so that it can be redistributed into its daughter cells, then the chromosome loosens itself, release its chromatids, which doubles uo itself and then forms a pair again.

Likewise when any protein has to be formed this dna molecule acts as a template strand and forms a complimentary rna strand over it by a process known as transcription. Now this rna translates itself into amino acid chains, forminv proteins.
