The EPA regularly tests cars to determine the gas mileage that they get. During the 2014 year, they tested 9 Toyota Prius\'s, randomly selected from a dealer\'s lot. The results of the gas mileage test is listed below. 3 MPG 56 48 55 58 49 52 25 Compute the median and the mean mpg for the Toyota Prius. Which value would be a better typical value for the Prius?

Solution

Calculation of mean:

Mean is the statistical average of a series of data.

Mean = X/N

X = Summation of given data

N = Number of data in the series

Mean = (56 + 48 +55 + 58 + 49 + 52 + 25)/7 = 343/7 = 49 mpg

Calculation of median:

The median is the middle number in a data series, arranged either in ascending or descending order.

For an odd no. of data series, Median = (n+1/2)th term

n = No. of data in the series

On rearranging data in ascending order, we get:

25, 48, 49, 52, 55, 56, 58

Median = (7 + 1)/2 = 8/2 = 4th term = 52 mpg

The median value is better as the mpg is higher than mean value.
