A square garden with 16 foot sides is reduced by x feet on one side and increased by x feet on an adjacent side. Does the area of the garden increase or decrease?

Solution

area of square = 16^2 = 256

since square has all sides equal

and if we reduce one by x and other increased by x then it will become an recangle

the area of rectangle = length*breadth

taking example

let x = 2

side will be 14 and 18

area = 14*18 = 252 hence area reduces.
