2. Suppose we have two pizzas of the same size. One of the pizzas is divided into four equal parts and the other into eight equal parts. Now suppose we want to add one piece of the first pizza to three pieces from the second pizza. How much pizza would you have? How did you calculate this? Show what you do to the numerator and denominators of your fractions and illustrate this with simple sketches.

Solution

Divided into 4 parts : Each part is a 1/4

Divided into 8 parts: Each part is 1/8

Adding them up :

1/4 + 1/8

The common denominator between 4 and 8 is 8

So write 1/4 or 2/8 and 1/8 is left as 1/8

2/8 + 1/8

3/8 ----> ANSWER

3/8th of an original pizza
