What substance, if it accumulates in the arterial blood and cerebrospinal fluid is a very powerful stimulus to increase ventilation?

Solution

Answer would be PaCO2.(PARTIAL PRESSURE OF CARBON DIODXIDE)

EXPLINATION

Central chemoreceptors which are Located bilaterally in brain\'s medulla:

They are Stimulated directly by H+ ions available in the cerebrospinal fluid, and indirectly by CO2

The BBB( blood brain barrier) is mostly impermeable to H+ and HCO3 but CO2 can freely diffuse from the blood into the cerebrospinal fluid.

In CSF(cerebrospinal fluid ) , CO2 gets hydrolized, thereby releasing H+.

An increase in CO2 therefore consquently increases H+ in (CSF) which stimulates the nerve cells neurons causing hyperventilation to restore normal levels pH and CO2.
