Dielectric materials are essentially insulators but provide support for electrostatic fields. Some examples of dielectric materials are listed below.

1. Dry air serves as a superior dielectric and is used in some transmission line types and variable capacitors.

2. Mineral oil is used extensively inside electrical transformers as a fluid dielectric and to assist in cooling.

3. The glass or ceramic plates used to support power lines and keep them from shorting out to the ground.

4. Porcelain, glass, plastics are solid dielectrics and are most commonly used dielectrics in electrical engineering.

5. Industrial coatings such as parylene provide a dielectric barrier between the substrate and its environment.

6. Distilled water, vaccum, ploysterene, polyethylene, mica are also used as dielectric materials.
