Give two examples of predictor or independent variable, and response or dependent variable.

Solution

A predictor or independent variable is the one which does not depend on any other variable and is used to predict or model the value of other variable.

While a response variable is the one which is dependent on the predictor variable value. It can be estimated given the value of the predictor variable(s).

The most simple example of this can be taken as the dependence of height over age. We know that the height of a person increases with his/her age. So, \'Age\' of a person can be used as a predictor while \'Height\' can be used as a \'Response\' variable.

This was an example where we had one predictor and one response variable.

There are several cases when there are more than one predictors for the response variable.

For example, the selling price of a house depends on the number of bedrooms, its area, age of the house and may be any other factor as well. So, in this case we have more than one predictor variables (Number of bedrooms, Ara, Age) while there is only one response variable (Selling Price). This is because a single predictor can not give us appropriate estimate of the response variable. So, we use multiple predictors to fit a better model for the dependent variable.
