Two flanges are EACH 0.625\" thick. They will be loaded with F = 42,000 lbs and need to be held together with 5/16\" NC Grade 5 bolts. Two normal washers are to be used for each bolt: one under the head and one under the nut. Specify a standard length for the bolt, Specify the required torque for a REUSED connection, Compute the number of bolts required for a load factor n, just greaterthanorequalto 2.0. Bolts washers, flanges are all steel: E = 30 x 10^6 psi.

Solution

a) Standard length of 5/16\" NC bolts = 5 in.

b) Diameter =d = 0.645 in

Load per bolt =Lpre =42000/5 = 8400 lbs.

Required torque for a reused connection =K*d*Lpre = 8400*0.645*0.20 = 1083.6 lb-in.

 Two flanges are EACH 0.625\
