The minced chicken bubbled tremendously faster like 1000x. The rusty nail just had few bubbles and they mostly just sat on the nail.
What would be a simple equation for each observation of rusty nail then one for minced chicken that may help describe what was observed?
Also, what are the bubbles a result of? What do they contain? and what is the inorganic catalyst?
INORGANIC VERSUS ORGANIC CATALYSTS Catalase is an enzyme that converts hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen gas. Found body tissues, catalase is one of the most rapidly acting enzymes in the body. in many Substrate (enzyme) Products 2 H2O2 catalase 2 H20 O2 Procedure: 1. Fill two small 100 beakers with 50 ml of hydrogen peroxide. Note the concentration of your stock hydrogen peroxide 3 2. Immerse a rusty nail in the solution in one beaker and then gently stir with a wooden stick. 3. Observe the effect, if any, of the inorganic catalyst and record your observations. 4. Next, in the plastic cups provided, mince some fresh chicken/beef liver with scissors and add it to the hydrogen peroxide in the second beaker. Stir the solution with a wooden stick and record your observations below:Solution
The minced chicken has catalase enzyme ..in presence of catalase H2O2 imediately spilts into Water molecule and oxygen molecule.
hence in minced chicken-
2H2O2----2H2O + O2( in presence of catalase)
Iron nail-
As catalase is absent,H2O2 does not split to give oxygen.Fe of the nail reacts to form precipate of Fe(OH3)
H2O2+ Fe----- 2 Fe(OH3)
The bubbles are a result of splitting of hydrogen peroxide to release oxygen causing the bubbles in water.
The bubbles contain oxygen.
The inorganic catalyst is Iron of the nail(Fe).
