The heat flux through a wood slab 50 mm thick, whose inner and outer surface temperatures are 40 and 20degreeC, respectively, has been determined to be 40 W/m^2. What is the thermal conductivity of the wood?

Solution

>> According to Fcourier Law of Heat Conduction

=> Q = KAdT/dx

or, Q/A = K*dT/DX

>> Here, Q/A = Heat Flux = 40 W/m2

>> K = Thermal Conductivity of the wood = ?

>> T1 = Inner Temperature = 40°C

>> T2 = Outer Temperature = 20°C

=> dT = Change in Temperature = 20°C

>> dx = Thickness = 50 mm = 0.05 m

>> Now, putting all values in above equation,

=> 40 = K*(40 - 20)/0.05

On solving,

=> K = 0.1 W-K/m .......THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF WOOD ...ANSWER.....
