Please circle the correct answer and show your calculations on the paper. 1·The difference between a code and a standard is essentially: (a) a code is not legally mandated (b) a code is enforced by the government (c) a standard is enforced by the government (d) more weight is given to standard requirements than to code requirements 2. Green design and design for sustainability are differentiated by their (a) design methods (b) applicable building codes (c) intended outcomes (relative to performance) (d) degree of design validation 3. Entropy is best described as: (a) a tendency for all energy forms to move toward increasing order (quality) (b) a tendency for all energy forms to move toward increasing disorder (un-usability) (c) the ability for matter and energy to be interchanged under extreme circumstances (d) another term for the energy used to manufacture building materials 4. A \"microclimate\" is best described as: (a) the thermal conditions on a localized area of a building material (b) climate conditions that briefly occur and then quickly dissipate (c) climate conditions in a relatively small area, such as directly surrounding a building (d) a summary of climate conditions that is based upon only 1-2 years of actual data 5·The \"greenhouse effect\" is of concern because: (a) it may block incoming solar radiation and lead to a cooling of the Earth (b) it may block incoming solar radiation and make solar collectors ineffective (c) it may cause such serious air pollution problems that our health is affected (d) it may trap incoming solar radiation and lead to a warming of the Eartlh 6. “Operative\" temperature is best described as: (a) including the effects of dry bulb temperature and relative humidity (b) the average of mean radiant temperature and air speed (c) including the effects of dry bulb and mean radiant temperatures (d) a temperature that describes how hot it \"feels\" in a space 7. Heat exchange from the body to its surrounding environment can occur via four means of heat flow. These types of heat flow (heat transfer) are: 8. ASHRAE\'s most notable involvement in comfort issues is through: (a) its publication of a thermal comfort standard (Standard 55) (b) its development of the bioclimatic chart and timetable of climatic needs (c) its publication of guidelines for design of passive cooling and heating systems (d) actually, ASHRAE has no involvement with thermal comfort 1 of 8

Solution

Pob.1 Answer: (B)

Standards are the detailed technical specifications for a product that the manufacturer should follow in order to get the desired results. On the other hand a code is a set of rules which is enforced by the government authorities. When a govt. asks you to follow a particular standard then this is a code, according to which you must follow that standard. So in this particular case, if standard is violated, automatically code gets violated.

Prob.2. Answer: (c) Intended Outcome

The main focus of Green Design is to be energy efficient, and to reduce the ill effects on the environment. So main focus is to use the materials which reduce the green house gases. Use of wind, solar and hydro energy is advised. On the other hand word \'sustainable\' has a bigger meaning, which means that the design or the end product must sustain itself for a long time without needing additional energy.

So the main aim of green design is to reduce the environment impact, but it may not be sustainable. Therefore green design is only a subset of sustainable design, and there aims are different.
