1. Wax, also a lipid, is an ester of a long chain alcohol and a long chain carboxylic acid. Write the structure of beeswax that contains 16 carbon of carboxylic acid and 30 carbon of alcohol.

2. Your doctor says your good cholesterol and bad cholesterol are in proper ratio. Briefly compare the structures and functions of the good and bad cholesterols.

Solution

Answer :

Good cholesterols contains high density lipoproteins (HDL) and contains nearly 20% cholesterol and remaining 80% is the protein content. They are so called because they remove cholesterol out of blood and prevents its deposition in the arteries.

whereas,

Bad cholesterols are made up of Low density lipoproteins (LDL), Intermediate density lipoproteins (IDL) and very low density lipoproteins (VLDL). They contains more than 80% cholesterol and 20 % of protein content. they are so called because they can build up on the walls of arteries and forms plaque which can clog arteries which in turn results in atherosclerosis and increases cardiovascular disease. The other difference is the type of apolipoprotein that they contain for example HDLs contains APO-A and the all the LDL contains APO-B.
