Suppose we collected the following data on the pH of the blood from two different samplings of each of 3 pocket gophers (G) from five different geographic localities (L). Suppose further that we specifically picked these geographic localities because they were known to differ in vegetation type and relevant climatic data. Results of an ANOVA yielded the following: What specific kind of ANOVA model is this? _____ What is a, b, and n? _____ What do the two pH values measured in each gopher represent? _____ Write out the expectation for M.S._A: _____ Write out the linear model for this ANOVA. _____ Are there significant differences in blood pH among localities? Are there significant differences in blood pH among gophers? _____

Solution

A) Mixed design as there are 5 independent groups with 3 subgroups in each, thus making it a 5x(3), mixed design anova.

B) A- independent variable, localities = 5

B- dependent subgroup- gophers/ locality = 3

N = number of participating individuals- 15

C) the two pH values in each gopher represents the variation in the value of the collected sample. Same values represent no variations , whereas difference in values represent sampling errors.

F) there are differences in blood pH depending on localities. Though, the difference is locality 1 and locality 2 , though the other three localities have more or less similar values.

G) there Are significant differences in blood pH among gophers. Although the average variation between localities is not high, there is at least a 0.2-0.4 pH change in gophers within localities.

 Suppose we collected the following data on the pH of the blood from two different samplings of each of 3 pocket gophers (G) from five different geographic loca
