Define osmotic pressure. Which solution, a 2 M solution of KCL or a 2 M solution of glucose would exert a greater osmotic pressure and why? about a 2 M solution of glucose and a 1 M solution of NaCl? If you place an egg in a solution of vinegar (5% acetic acid and 95% water) the acetic acid will dissolve the egg shell. What would happen to the size of the egg after remaining in this solution for several days? Why?
Solution
Osmotic pressure depends on the number of particles in solution. NaCl splits into two particles in solution - Na+ and Cl-. The glucose does not dissociate and has one particle. Therefore NaCl solution has greater osmotic pressure.
2M Glucose and 1M NaCl solution have equal osmotic pressure since both the solution have equal number of particles.
The egg without shell would still have a semipermeable membrane. When kept in water solution it would swell and increase in size.
