What is “Meaningful Use”, why is it necessary and what impact does it have on informatics?

Meaningful Use refers to the use of electronic health record (EHR) technology that is certified and used as per US government standards to maintain electronic health records of patients so that these data can be exchanged between patients and the health care providers or between patients and medical insurer providers when required.It is necessary because of the following reasons:

Meaningful Use is necessary for nursing practices as nurses understand patient,their needs and their treatment profile better.Through use of meaningful use,data collected while dealing with patients can be stored in a better way by making use of IT that can be communicated or shared with appropriate personnel as and when required to carry out specific functions.

Meaningful Use has a positive impact on informatics.It creates an increased demand for IT.It makes the use of IT in health care sectors more often as everything from dealing with a patient to his treatment record can be accessed by health care experts from any part of the world.
