Answer :
Group policy is used to enforce implement the setting in the computer .Administrators use Group Policy to enhance and control users\' desktops .In an organisation there is domain where all the computers are part of the domain. To manage and administration computers centally placed domain controller is used. Users in domain are categoried further in various groups depending on the hierarchy , priviledge level or business unit. Policy then implemented on the users computers.
for example: We have to implement security policy for internet access based on business requirement in order to optimise the bandwidth and productivity.
We divide the users in several groups and apply the policy accordingly. The policy information is stored in Group Policy objects , which are linked to selected Active Directory containers: sites, domains, and organizational units.A Group Policy Object can be used to filter objects based on security group membership, which allows administrators to manage computers and users in either a centralized or a de-centralized manner. To do this, administrators can use filtering based on security groups to define the scope of Group Policy management, so that Group Policy can be applied centrally at the domain level, or in a decentralized manner at the Organisation Units level, and can then be filtered again by security groups.
The proxy settings of browser also be controlled through group and that is further synced with proxy gateway device in order implement the categorised internet access.
There are several other use of group policy such as the settings for groups of users and of computers, including registry-based policy settings, software installation, scripts (computer startup and shutdown, and log on and log off), and folder redirection. These settings can be pushed through GPO to user machine centrally.
I will keep the answer reasonably short.
Thanks
