Estimate the fraction of the total volume in this cube that is extracellular matrix? How many eukaryotic cells can fit in this 10^6 mum^3 cube? Assume the average volume of a cell is 10^3 mu m^3. How many eukaryotic cells can fit in this 10^3 mu n^3 cube? Assume the average volume of a cell is 10^3 mu m^3. How many prokaryotic cells can in this 10^3 mu m^3 cube? Assume the average volume of a cell is 1 mu m^3
Solution
Answer 3. Let\'s assume each cell has volume = 103 um3 and there are 1000 such cells in the cube. So, the volume occupied by all the cells = 1000 X 103, i.e. = 106 um3
The volume of cube itself is 106 um3, So, there is no space left for the extracellular matrix in the cube.
Answer 4. As mentioned above, The volume of cube is 106 um3, If each cell has volume of 103 um3, lets assume x number of cells can be accomodated in the cube, then
103 * x = 106
or, x = 106/103
x = 1000 cells
Answer 5. Only one cell of volume 103 um3 can be accomodated by the cube having volume of 103 um3.
Answer 6. 1000 cells of volume 1 um3 can fit in the cube of 103 um3, as can be calculated the same way in the answer 4.
