A survey of women and men asked for their favorite flavor of ice cream. The results are shown. At alpha = 0.05, can it be concluded that the favorite flavor of ice cream is of gender? Use the five step traditional approach.

Solution

H₀:we can conclude that the favorite flavor of ice cream is independent of gender against H₁:we cannot conclude that the favorite flavor of ice cream is independent of gender. Then the 2x4 contigency table is :

  

Chisquare cal=3.5671 and chisquare tabulated at .05 with (2-1)*(4-1)=3 degrees of freedom is 7.815, cal value < tab value , so we accept null hypothesis i.e.,we can conclude that the favorite flavor of ice cream is independent of gender.
