A local TV station did some exit polling of voters for a particular ballot proposal. A 95% Confidence Interval for the proportion of voters in favor of this ballot proposal was (.45, .55). Based on these results, what should the TV station report to its viewers regarding the status of this proposal?
Solution
The null hypothesis here is : H0 : The proportion of voters in favor of this ballot proposal is <= 0.5 ag. alt Hypothesis: H1: The proportion of voters in favor of this ballot proposal is > 0.5..
The 95% confidence interval = ( 0.45 , 0.55)
i.e, mean = ( 0.45 + 0.55)/2 = 0.50..
margin of error = + or - 0.05..
so the point 0.50 is contained by the interval ( 0.45 , 0.55)..
so, we can\'t reject the null hypothesis that the proportion of voters in favor of this ballot proposal is <= 0.5 and can\'t conclude that the majority is in favor of this ballot proposal!!..
