In pumped storage plant works as peak load plant. During off peak load water is pumped back to the head water pool from tail race and during peak load the head water is used to generate power to meet the demand. hence synchronous machine can act as synchronous generator during peak load and during off peak load it can act as synchronous motor or synchronous condeser. The turbine used is called Reversible Turbine.
