Why is Hemoglobin F the majority right after birth?

Solution

Foetal Hemoglobin is the major type of hemoglobin in the neonatals and the newborn until 6months after birth. Hemglobin F has a serine aminoacid residue instead of histidine as in adult hemoglobin thus binds less to a compound called 2,3 Bisphosphoglycerate and binds tightly to oxygen than adult hemoglobin as this is required to obtain oxygen from the mother\'s circulation. Immeadiately after birth the gaseous exchange shifts towards lungs rather than the umbilical cord. The genes responsible for the synthesis of adult hemoglobin switch on at six months till this happens the HbF is the major hemoglobin after birth.
