Two methods, A and B, were used in a determination of the latent heat of fusion of ice. The investigators wanted to find out by how much the methods differed. The following table gives the change in total heat from ice at -.72 degree Celsius to water 0 degree Celsius in calories per gram of mass. Use a suitable nonparametric method to to decide if the two populations differ in location. Use the 0.01 level of significance. Do not use a normal approximation.

Solution

Here we use Mann whitney U test.

H0: the means are the same

H1: the means are different

We use excel to carryout the analysis.

U=21.5

the critical value is 15. Hence we accept H0.
