Research specialization today vs. broad expertise of 1800s
Nowadays, research specialization has shifted to exact subject base. Students can do there majors and masters in a particular subject only. In this competitive world, they would qualify to do the research only in that subject, whose exam they pass out. In contrast, broad expertise was possible in 1800s because no such entrance exam, selection criterion used to be there that time. That is why, Mendel could work both on botany and meteorology. Nowadays, this is not possible. A student/researcher/scientist would be able to work either on meteorology or on botany.
Second, research specialization today is easy in terms of cost. In 1800s a unit of electricity would cost too much in comparison to what it cost\'s today. So, in terms of facilities to perform research, research specialization is better nowadays.
In 1800s research was mostly like \"throwing an arrow in darkness\". This was because of lack of computer technology, lack of microscopes and lack of fund. In that terminology also, research specialization would be easier nowadays.

Yes, that is possible today even. Mendel proposed planting peas by the hundreds. Nowadays, advanced techniques would allow planting peas by thousands, even millions. Advanced techniques of tissue culture, protoplast culture would make that possible.
