Consider a location where the wind speed is 10 m/s and the air density is 1.225kg/m^3. A large wind turbine has a diameter of 120 m; what is e density? What is the maximum turbine power? At maximurn efficiency, what is the force required to hold the turbine in place?

Solution

a)

Power = 1/2*rho*A*V^3 = 1/2*1.225*pi*60^2*10^3

Power = 6.927 MW

b)

According to Betz limit

The maximum turbine power is

Pmax = (16/27)*6.927 = 4.106 MW

c)

We can write

F*V = Pmax

F*10 = 4.106*10^6

F = 0.411 MN
