Find the domain of the function and identify any vertical and horizontal asymptotes. f(x)= x+2/x^2-4

Solution

f(x) = (x+2) / (x^2 - 4)

setting denominator to 0 and solving for x

x^2 - 4 = 0 x = + - 2

therefore, domain is all values of x and x not equal to + 2 and -2

interval notation

(-infinity , -2 )U(2 , infinity )

vetical asymptotes are x = 2 and x = -2

since degree of numerator is less than degree of denominator . the horizontal asymptote is at y = 0
