How is a p-value defined?

Using One-Sample t-test, calculate the standard error of the mean (SEM) when the standard deviation of the original distribution is 1.25 and the sample size is 40.

Using the SEM derived in problem 4, calculate the t-statistic when the mean sample size is 2 and the predicted value is 1.

Solution

Define Null Hypothesis:

A null hypothesis is a hypothesis which states that there is no significance difference between specified populations. If there is any observed difference it must be due to sampling or experimental error.

P-value:

The probability of an observed result assuming that null hypothesis is true is termed as P-value.

SEM = 1.25/sqrt(40) = 0.198

Test statistic , t = (2 - 1)/0.198 = 5.06
