26) What are some of the factors that influence the conduction of an action potential?

27) What is membrane resistance? Longitudinal resistance? The length constant?

28) What are some of the ways to increase the rate at which an action potential propagates?

29) What are the major classes of glia in the nervous system?

30) What is the major function of each type of glial cell?

31) How are glial cells similar to neurons? How are they different?

Solution

26.Some of the factors that influence the conduction of an action potential are :

27.Membrane resistance is defined as the force that obstructs the electric current flow from the outside of the membrane to the inside of the membrane and vice versa.Longitudinal resistance is the resistance offered along the length of the axon.Length constant () is a constant that quantifies the distance travelled by an electric potential along a neurite through passive electrical conduction.Greater value of the length constant means the potential will travel further.

28.Some ways to increase the rate at which an action potential propagates are:

29.The major classes of glia in the nervous system are :

30.The major function of each type of glial cell is:

31.Glial cells are similar to neurons in a way that being a part of the nervous system and supporting the neurons, they assist the neurons during the transmission of signals from one body part to the other ,thus supporting the functions of the neurons. They are different from neurons as they have only one process in comparision to neurons that have two processes i.e axons and dendrites, glial cells cannot generate action potential but neurons can do so,no synapses are present in case of glial cells but in case of neurons synapses are present and finally the glial cells outnumber the neurons in the brain.
