The sound from an organ pipe is analyzed into its constituent frequencies; they are
found to be 440 Hz, 1320 Hz, 2200 Hz, . . . (a) Is the pipe open-open or open-closed? (b) How long is the
pipe? Use the speed of sound vs = 330 m/s.

Solution

Frequencies f = 440 Hz

                 f \' = 1320 Hz

                f \" = 2200 Hz

Speed of sound v = 330 m/s

f \' / f = 1320 / 440

       = 3

f \"/ f = 2200/440

       = 5

i.e., odd harmonics are formed. Therefore it is open-closed organ pipe.

(b) We know f = v/4L

From this length of th epipe L = v/4f

                                           = 330/(4x440)

                                          = 0.1875 m
