A uniform meter stick is balanced at its midpoint with a sin

A uniform meter stick is balanced at its midpoint with a single support. A 45 N weight is suspended at the 38 cm mark. At what point must a 24 N weight be hung to balance the system?

Distance from midpoint = XXXX centimeters

A woman weighs 600 Newtons on earth. If the gravitational constant on the moon is 1/6th of earths, What is her mass on the moon? What is her weight on the moon?

Mass on the moon = XXX kilograms

Weight on the moon= XXX Newtons

Find the mass and weigh of an object if a resultant force of 230 newtons causes it to decrease its velocity by 10 m/s in 5 seconds.

Mass = XXX kilograms

Weight = XXX Newtons

Solution

1) To balance the stick the moment due to the weightshould cancel out each other:

F1*d1 = F2*d2

45(50 -38) = 24(d-50)

divide by 3 both sides: 15*12 = 8(d-50)

15*3 = 2(d-50)

7.5 = d-50

d= 50+7.5 = 62.5 cm

Distance from midpoint = 7.5 cm

2) Weight = mass*acc. due to gravity(g)

W = m*g

Now mass remains constant on earth and moon:

mass = w/g =600/9.81 = 61.16 kg

Weight on moon:

W1/g1 = W2/g2 = mass = constant

600/g1 = W2/g1/6

W2 =600/6 = 100 Netwon

3) accelartion = change invelocitytime difference = 10/5 = 2 mt/sec^2

Force = mass*acceleration

mass = 230/2 = 115 kilograms

Weight = mass*acc. due to gravity =115*9.81 = 1128.15 Netwons
