A technician is working alone on the third shift in a hospital\'s chemistry stat lab. She receives, simultaneously from the emergency room, five specimens for analysis. They are: A. blood gas B. a Renal profile (Na, K, CL, CO2, Glucose, BUN, Creatinine) C. a serum beta-HCG (pregnancy test) D. a sample for urinalysis (dipstick plus microscopic) 1. What clinical and laboratory factors should the technician consider in deciding upon the order of analysis? 2. What, if any, acute emergency situation might be most commonly associated with each of these specimens? The letter corresponds to the above ordered test. A. B. C. D. 3. For which of the situations discussed in question 2 would the physician\'s potentially life-saving medical decision-making be most likely to depend on the laboratory results? 4. The order the specimens should be processed is: Ten minutes after the first five samples arrived, another blood gas specimen arrives in the laboratory. 5. How might this change the order of the tests being done, if at all?

Solution

1.Technician though has to give report of all the test within time limit few test like blood gas test , renal profile one has to give early report which require quick treatment.

2.Renal profile done to check normal functioning of kidney while blood gas test done immediately to check kidney failure, heart failure etc. Pregnancy test to see mother health.

3. Blood gas test and renal profile can be done to normal functioning of different organ.

4.If another sample of blood gas comes it should be done immediately.

5. Blood gas test is done to measure oxygen and CO 2 in blood and thus help in determining the pH of the blood this test is done to check kidney failure, heart failure, chemical poisoning, diabetes disorder etc so after this test ,Renal profile should be done to kidney function, then pregnancy test and lastly dipstick test for hematuria which is indicative of Urinary track infection.l
