Mid term Excom 91. (8 Marks) 353 of 13 c A sample of silty clay has a total mass of 27 g, a dry mass of 23 g a volume and a specific gravity of solids 2.7. Determine 1) Volume of solids 2) Void ratio 3) Water content 4) Degree of saturation ANSWER

Solution

a)dry mass=23 g

specific gravity=2.7

therefore, density of particles = 2.7 g/cc

volume of solids = 23/2.7=8.5 cc

b)total volume of voids = 13-8.5=4.5 cc

void ratio = 4.5/8.5=0.52

c)mass of water = 27-23=4 g

water content = 4/23=0.17 =17%

d)We know, s=G*w/e = 2.7*0.17/0.52=0.88

Degree of saturation is 88%
