There are several approaches to segmenting the construction
There are several approaches to segmenting the construction industry. Your text categorizes construction projects into industrial, heavy engineering, residential, or building segments.
Industrial Construction
Heavy Engineering Construction
Residential Construction
Building Construction
Refineries, plants, and mills
Bridges, pipelines, tunnels, and highways
Single-family homes, town homes, apartment buildings and complexes
Warehouses, schools, commercial malls, and hospitals
Consider these segments and the types of projects that constitute each. Which project characteristics can make construction management projects difficult in each industry segment? Important project characteristics include size, technological contents, complexity, location, schedule demands. Suggest three characteristics for each industry segment.
| Industrial Construction | Heavy Engineering Construction | Residential Construction | Building Construction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Refineries, plants, and mills | Bridges, pipelines, tunnels, and highways | Single-family homes, town homes, apartment buildings and complexes | Warehouses, schools, commercial malls, and hospitals |
Solution
Industrial Construction -
1. This involves the installation of heavy machinery and fully modern equipments, as a result the construction design should be advanced and matching with the updated requirements which is a big task for the designers.
2. Location of these projects might not be in cities and generally in outskirts. This involves difficulty in material transportation and manpower.
3. It involves the processing and manufacturing of chemical and artificial compounds. High care should be taken in the construction phase since the beginning to end of the project to prevent the leakages and hazardous explosions.
Heavy Engineering Construction -
1. These are time bound projects, so there will be tight schedule for the completion of project.
2. Huge quantity of construction equipments and and enormous number of manpower is required. Management becomes difficult.
3. Risk management plays a vital role in this type of projects, as it involves working in the underground, greater heights and against the river flow etc.
Residential Construction -
1. Because of high accuracy needed in the internal dimensions of the house projects, extra care should be taken to maintain proper measurements all over the building.
2. Schedule demands is another big headache as the clients wont agree with the delay in handing over the building from the builders.
3. Building houses in the congested places like residential extension faces the problem in the handling of construction equipments like excavators, loaders etc as there will not be much space to operate.
Building Construction -
1. Architectural design becomes challenging as more number of school and hospitals are existing all over the world.
2. As size of the buildings are usually big, involves more manpower and needs to divide and get the work done in time
3. Interior design and execution involves high skill and innovations to meet the present day demand in the market.
