The table below lists the probability that selected players were able to hit the green in regulation(GIR). According to the PGA Tour, a green is considered hit in regulation if any portion of the ball is touching the putting surface after the GIR stroke has been taken.

Suppose these three golfers are playing a round at Sawgrass and they tee up on number 11, one of the most difficult holes to play on the professional tour.

a) What is the probability that all three players will hit the green in regulation?

b) What is the probability that none of the three players will hit the green in regulation?

c) What is the probability that exactly one of the players will hit the green in regulation?

d) What is the probability that all three players will hit the green in regulation on all four rounds?

e) What is the probability that at lease one golfer will not hit the green in regulation?

Solution

a. Pall = P1 * P2 * P3 = 0.6848 * 0.6760 * 0.6736 = 0.3116895392

b. Pnone = 1 - Pall = 0.6883104608

c. Pexact1 = P1*(1-P2)*(1-P3) + (1-P1)*P2*(1-P3) + (1-P1)*(1-P2)*P3 = 0.2108590176

d. P4 = Pall*Pall*Pall = 0.03028075

e. Patleast1 = Pnone + Pexact1 = 0.8991694784

Cheers

PS - Ask if you have any doubt, I\'m bit doubtful about the fourth part though :)
