8. Determine the concentration of CO 300m downwind of a busy highway. The highway blows carries 3200 cars/hour at an average speed of 45 miles/hours. A 4 m/s wind perpendicular to the road. The atmospheric stability is class B. Note that light duty gasoline vehicles have an average emission factor of 3.8g CO/mile. List your assumptions. 15 points

Solution

Given:-

Speed = 45 miles/hour

Total cars = 3200 cars/hour

Average emission factor = 3.8 g CO/mile

Wind speed = 4 m/s

X = 300 m

Then z = 15 m

Q = 3.8 * 45 * 1/3600 * (1 car)/(22.4 m)

Q = 2.12 * 10-3 g /m3

u = 4 m/s

C (300,0) = 2Q/((2)*zu)

C (300 ,0 ) = (2 *2.12 * 10-3 )/((2) * 15*4)

C (300 ,0 ) = 28.1 µg/m3      Answer

 8. Determine the concentration of CO 300m downwind of a busy highway. The highway blows carries 3200 cars/hour at an average speed of 45 miles/hours. A 4 m/s w
