Solution

let the mass of 5kg cart = m1 and initial velocity = u1 = 8m/s and final velocity after collision = v1 = 0

and mass of 8 kg cart = m2   and initial velocity = u2 and final velocity = v2 =0

by conservation of momentum   m1u1+m2u2 = m1v1+m2v2   since v1 = v2 = 0

                m1u1 =- m2 u2

              u2 = - m1u1 / m2

                   = 5*8 kg /8 = -5 m/sec

   and the direction is left ; we assume right is +ve and left is -ve

        so the initial velocity of 8 kg cart is 5m/sec towards left.

 A 5 kg cart rolling to the right at 8 m/s runs into a 8 kg cart rolling to the left. After the collision, both carts are stationary. What is the original speed
