Problem 2 James and Jade travel to work James left at 6 50
Problem 2: James and Jade travel to work. James left at 6 : 50 AM, but Jade left 10 minutes later. Both drove at constant speed. The following graphs show the distance (in miles) each of them traveled at time t (in minutes), where t = 0 is 7:00 AM . ?
Use the graph to decide which of them is traveling faster.
Find the speed((in mi/h) at which each of them is driving
Find a linear functions f and g that model the distances that James and Jade travel as functions of t (in minutes).
Solution
slope of each graph would give the speed
Jade , slope = (16 -10)/(6 -0) = 6/6 = 1 mi/hr
Jari , slope = (7 -0)/( 6 -0) = 7/6 = 1.167 mi/hr
So, Jari is travelling faster
Function Jade : f(t) = 10 +t
Jari : f(t) = 1.167t
