Describe where in the digestive system microorganisms are found and TWO (2) ways that they contribute to our digestion. (2 marks; 3 marks total)
Solution
Micro organisms that are found in digestive system are called Gut flora. They live in the digestive tracts of humans and other animals. They are mainly present in the colon, also called the large intestine, and in the part of the small intestine furthest away from the stomach. Gut flora Help Digest and Absorb Foods. Humans do not make the enzymes that degrade many plant structures and so need the help that bacteria supply. Lactobacillus helps ferment indigestible carbohydrates. Lactobacillus, produces lactic acid and helps with the breakdown of carbohydrates, fat, and protein during digestion, breaking food down into smaller components that the body can more readily absorb and use. Some species of bacteria in the digestive system make vitamin K and vitamins from the B group which are difficult to obtain from food and cannot be manufactured by humans. As well as their helpful effects in maintaining an optimum pH .
