Travis needs to place a beam below the roof that is perpendicular to the roof and passes through the point (5,0). The beam is shown in red in the following graph.

What is the equation of the line the beam lies on?

4 2 68 10 12 14 16N8 20 2

Solution

Eqn of line which passes through two points

[y-y-{1}/y-{2}-y-{1}] = [x-x-{1} / x-{2}-x-{1}]

First point is (5,0) secound point from the graph (4.5,7)

Therefor eqn of line is putting the value in the eqn

[y-y-{1}/y-{2}-y-{1}] = [x-x-{1} / x-{2}-x-{1}]

P(5,0) and Q(4.5,7)

(y-0)/(7-0) = (x-5)/(4.5-5)

y/7 = -(x-5/.5)

-7x+0.5y+35 = 0

Eqn of line the beam lies on
