Why might we choose a phylogeny based on morphological chara
Why might we choose a phylogeny based on morphological characters over one based on DNA sequence, or vice versa? Name one pro and one con of each (think about the nature of changes in morphology and changes in DNA).
Solution
Phylogey or Phylogenetics is defined as branch of biological science which is based on common features and characteristics that obtained based on communal descent from common ancestors. This clearly describes the evolutionary history and relationships between living organisms.
Genetic species concept:
This concept is based on the genomic similarities or differences between organisms, many of the questions that are not answered the concepts developed based on morphological studies can be answered by genetic species concept. The DNA sequencing is very helpful in determining the speciation of small organisms like bacteria.
This concept also has disadvantages because it need the human decision (to some extent) in determining the distance sufficient to constitute different species.
Morphological species concept:
In this, the organisms are classified based on their morphological characters that are readily visible. It is the most simple and widely used specifically in case of plants. But there is too much variation in determining differences between the individuals and no two organisms in a population appear identical morphologically.
