Why is it important to install leaky steam traps as soon as possible?
Solution
A Steam trap is a device to purge steam condensate from a system without venting uncondensed steam. Simply stated, steam traps vent out air and other non-condensable gases quickly while holding back the live steam. Unfortunately, steam traps have a tendency to leak, which can add up to hundreds of dollars per year of wasted steam for a single steam trap.
Steam traps fail in two ways: open and closed.
(1) When a steam trap fails open, it acts like an open valve, completely leaking the steam and condensate. Following are the problems which might be faced:
(a) Increased steam consumption.
(b) Increased load on the boiler.
(2) When a steam trap fails closed, it acts like a closed valve not allowing the steam and condensate to pass through it. Following are the problems which might be faced:
(a) Water hammer and pressure surges.
(b) Water logging in the process.
(c) Damage to piping and process equipment.
(d) Compromised safety.
Whether a steam trap fails open or closed, it does equal damage to the steam system and hence, should be repaired or replaced as soon as possible.
