What are the differences between the solidification of pure metals and metal alloys?

Solution

During solidification, pure metal converts from liquid state to solid sate at a single temperature while an alloy solidifies over a range of temperature. Pure metal composition remains constant throughout solidification process but the composition of alloy changes continuously. But the composition of alloy in the solid sate becomes same as that when it was in liquid state.that is, this change of composition take place only during liquid+ solid state. Importantly , all this occurs only during cooling under equilibrium conditions.
