Part A: Describe, in your own words, what happens to an iron-carbon alloy with .6% Carbon as it cools SLOWLY from 3000 degree Fahrenheit down to room temperature. Describe the process and any transitions including phase changes, property changes and ANY other information of material science importance.

Part B: Describe the processes and transitions if this same alloy is cooled QUICKLY from 2000 degrees Fahrenheit.

>> When it is cooled slowly from 3000 degree Fahrenheit, then following phase transformations are occured :

1). After some time, coarse pearlite formation takes place as at high temperature, more layer can slide

2). After further more time, now, fine pearlite forms because now diffusivity o layers starts decreasing

3). On cooling further, Bainite structure forms which have very low diffusivity and that\'s why iron molecules are presented in form of crystals in carbon .

>> Now , when it is cooled quickly from 2000 degree Fahrenheit, then Martensite formation takes place. Martensite structure is very hard one and very brittle in nature.
