predict the effect of ampicillin on the transformed and non-transformed E.coli cells
Solution
I guess you are asking the question in terms of recombinant DNA technology. In this process, the restriction sites are present in some antibiotic resistant genes. In this case, the researchers have selected ampicillin resistant gene. when this gene is intact, it confers resistance to the cell against ampicillin. When the desired gene is inserted into plasmid, it gets inserted into the restriction sites that are present in ampicillin resistant gene. This results in the loss of activity of ampicillin resistance and hence the recombinants or transformed E. coli cells can not grow in ampicillin containing medium. Whereas non-recombinants or non-transformed E. coli cells can grow in the medium containing ampicillin.
