what is multiplicity and how to I find it?

Solution

Multiplicity for a polynomial is defined as number of times a particular zero exists for a polynomial.

Ex : f(x) = (x -1)^3(x -2)^2( x+1)

Now here x = 1 has multiplicity of 3

x = 2 has multiplicty of 2

x = -1 has multiplicity of 1

To find the mulitiplicty . write the polynomial in factored form like f(x) = ( x -a1)^m(x - a2)^n ....( x - an)

Then equate f(x) =0 , each factor is equated to zero and the degree of (x -a)^m defines the mutiplicity.
